Engaged

This is a picture Ben's mom took while we were telling his grandmother that we were engaged.

My mom modeled the ring to us and it kills me I have to wait until Christmas until
I can put that baby on.

I don't really know where to start with this post because I have so much to say, but I feel like I won't be able to accurately capture the excitement, the nerves, the buzzing and blooming feelings Ben and I had on the night he proposed, the night I said yes, the night we called our parents and told them we were really going to do this thing, and everything that has followed since then.

We're engaged. We are engaged.

It happened a couple nights ago. Ben had been planning on asking me in Brussels with a beautiful, delicate 18k yellow gold wedding ring with a flawless pear shaped diamond pressed into the middle, but because of the additional European taxes, he couldn't figure out a safe way to get it into the country. Feeling a bit anxious, he had the package rerouted to my parents home in Chicago and then waited until 12 a.m. our time to catch my dad before he went golfing to ask him for permission.

My dad was beside himself. He told Ben of course, he'd love him to be a part of our family, but then told him he didn't envy him the task of asking me: "These days you need to write a girl's name on a blimp to ask her to marry you."

Ben ran right back inside (I was washing up for bed in the bathroom), grabbed my YiaYia's cocktail ring that I like to wear and met me as I was coming outside of the bathroom.

It was perfect, informal, in-the-moment, sporadic, young and hopeful, just like us.

We're going it. We're going to get married.

We started with calling Ben's parents, then our friends all over the world. It was amazing being able to share such exciting news with the people we hold dearest to us.

We changed our facebook statuses and watched as love notes, comments, and likes poured in. The affection was amazing. I've never felt so loved or so in love. Everything fits perfectly and I feel so at peace with my life.

So now comes the wedding planning part. Ben and I have been scouring Etsy and wedding blogs, planning and plotting. I was actually a bit surprised at the role he has been playing in all this--I knew he would want to help with the food, but I had no idea how invested he would be in the decorations, the venues, all of it. It's been such a wonderful thing to go through together. The two of us embarking on this creative adventure together. I can't wait to see what we come up with.

But to be honest, to be totally honest with you, anything would do. I'm going to marry my most favorite friend, my nearest and dearest, my partner in every sense of the world. I feel like I am just exactly when I am supposed to be and isn't that just such a good feeling?
